Mourinho explains how Huddersfield were 'different' in the FA Cup

Toby Lambert, February 19, 2018

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has opened up on the club’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The Portuguese boss and his players desperately needed to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle and managed to successfully do so.

While an FA Cup win is unlikely to relieve pressure on Premier League performances, it could potentially help build momentum as United aim to secure the second spot in the table.

With many fans growing frustrated and concerned with the club’s recent uninspiring displays, a win helps to set things up for the future.

Mourinho was certainly happy with the result and believes the home side played with a different mentality to when the Red Devils faced them last time around.

According to Examiner, Jose said: “I am happy that we are in the quarter-final. I am happy we won a match, especially after the defeat (at Newcastle last weekend).

“It was the kind of game where a draw would not be a drama to take the match to Old Trafford, but the game was difficult. I think they had a different approach to what they had in the Premier League.”

Huddersfield were accused of putting up the ‘Berlin Wall’ in the two clubs’ previous meeting by the former Chelsea manager.

Manchester United managed to win that match eventually as well but this time around had to deal with intense pressure from the home side.

This time, Jose Mourinho and his men had to deal with continuous attacks from their opposition in a match where the defence in particular was severely tested.

Thankfully Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling rose to the occasion but they were also well protected by a midfield three made up of the two defensive minded players Michael Carrick and Nemanja Matic alongside Scott McTominay.

The young academy product was also mindful of his defensively responsibilities and played as he normally does in a rather conservative manner.
