LAFAYETTE, Colo. (ABC NEWS) – A teacher accused of assaulting a middle school student who wouldn’t stand for the pledge of allegiance is facing criminal charges.
The Angevine Middle School PE Teacher Karen Smith has been on paid leave since she was accused of lifting a student by his jacket and taking him out of the classroom because he wouldn’t stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.
The district policy allows for students to sit or stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
After working with Lafayette Police, the Boulder DA decided to charge Smith with child abuse and assault.
Her first court date has not been set.
